Love isn’t all that’s on Karan Johar’s mind!

I hate walking into an empty bedroom at night. There’re large lonely moments. Fortunately, I’ve the best relationship possible with my mother. That makes up for every relationship I don’t have. Of course, I’d love to be in a relationship. But it has to be one I completely believe in,” said the Dharma Productions chief, Karan Johar, a while ago. The director-producer has been passionately dishing out one blockbuster after another. Now 40, Karan has kept his personal life locked away from the media and the world as a whole. Though he has been quizzed time and again about his personal life and the relationships he has, Karan Johar has maintained a distance between his private life and his work on the big-screen.

“I have invariably been in love when I haven’t had the same reciprocated emotion at all. I don’t choose to talk about my personal life because I believe that I don’t want to and I believe my personal life is personal,” said Karan Johar. The director of several hit films including Kuch Hota Hai in 1998, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham in 2001, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in 2006, My Name Is Khan in 2010 and the recent campus romance Student of the Year, Karan has also stated that his biggest hope is to find love.

But that isn’t all that’s on this multifaceted individual’s life. Karan has spent his time crafting films, diligently and meticulously. His films have created a mark in the minds of movie-goers in India as well as internationally. The director has also mentioned that he’s got no plans to marry any time in the near future and prefers staying married to his work! “Right now I am not ready for any kind of relationship as I am too used to my independence. Marriage is a definite no-no. I am totally married to my company.”

“I love the magic of the movies” – Karan Johar

Karan Johar has been directing films since more than a decade now and has successfully unleashed several blockbusters including like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010) and Student of the Year (2012). Besides these, Karan has also produced several hit films that have wowed the audiences in India and abroad. Known for his particularly glamorous and charming films, Karan takes his profession seriously and considers it more of a passion than a business. “I think the rea

son why we do what we do is because all of us in the company are very passionateabout cinema. It’s not a day job for me; it’s a passion job for me. So, when you have both passion and profession walking hand in hand, you can’t really go wrong,” said Karan.

For Karan, a film’s success depends not on its collections at the box office but on its longevity. A film is required to be memorable and not just a quick seller. “I think if a film doesn’t last in longevity and in people’s memories, it is not a film of importance or relevance. Box office numbers are eventually your report card in the business. But I think what’s really important is that you must make a film, which is remembered. So, to leave the film behind in the minds of a cinegoer should be every filmmaker’s objective,” added Karan.

Karan Johar has become one of Bollywood’s most sought after directors. A trend-breaker in the world of Indian movies, Karan has etched a mark in the minds of fans and industry members with his films. “I am a great believer in cinema. I love films. I love the magic of the movies. And I think when you love the movies, you create the movies,” articulated Karan Johar.

Student of the Year was a big responsibility for Karan Johar and Dharma Productions

“The film is a big responsibility on Dharma Production’s shoulders and mine. We are launching the career of three new faces through this film – Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra. All of them are very promising and talented. So, we as a production house have to make sure that we stand up to the expectation of all,” said

Karan Johar before the release of the film Student of the Year. Well, it does seem like the director and his production house, Dharma Productions, have together taken up their responsibility exceptionally well. Karan’s latest release, Student of the Year, has successfully left a mark on the audiences and has been proclaimed a blockbuster.

The film has launched four promising newcomers to the glittering world of movies. Model-turned-actor Siddharth Malhotra, veteran filmmaker David Dhawan’s son Varun Dhawan, director Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter Alia Bhatt and actor Boman Irani’s son Kayoze Irani have all made their big-screen debuts with the film. And as we all

are well aware about, launching newcomers with a big budget film is a risk not many director-producers would willingly take up.

Karan however seems to have unshakable faith on Siddharth, Varun and Alia and that seems to have paid off too! before the film’s release, Karan articulated, “Siddharth Malhotra as well as Varun Dhawan had assisted me in “My Name Is Khan” and were involved in the process of production right throughout. Moreover they also observed me quite closely as a director. What I like about them is that they are totally different from each other, be in terms of personality or energy. I realized that they had the faces that were for cinema and it was about time that they were seen on the big screen.”

As always, Karan has been showered with praises by trade analysts and industry members alike. “The one major difference between Karan Johar and the other directors is that he is still very youthful. His films always have something for the entire family, even in a young and a trendy film like Student of the Year. His films cater to all sections of the audiences and have emotions and fantasy, which is missing from today’s filmmakers who normally walk on the path of realism” said trade analyst Amod Mehra.

And that’s not where the praise stops. Trade guru Atul Moha went on to add, “Karan is one of the blessed filmmakers who know how to blend commerce with creativity. He transformed Dharma Productions into one of the biggest brands not only in India but overseas too. People have started identifying Dharma Productions as a house from where comes wholesome entertainers with family values, music, looks, etc and all this has been done single handedly by KJo.”

Student of the Year is a campus romance that revolves around the lives of three students at a well-heeled school. Together, the three deal with the ups and downs of life and compete against each other to try winning the Student of the Year trophy.

Karan Johar does what he does best – directing a perfect campus romance, Student of the Year!

Karan Johar has always loved campus-romances and has proved the fact with his first directorial venture, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). The director seems to have a knack of bringing to life relationships set in extravagant environments. In his previous coming-of-age tale of romance, Karan Johar had portrayed a love triangle between Shah Ru

kh Khan, Rani Mukerji and Kajol. For his latest film however, Karan decided to bring in newcomers instead of starring Bollywood bigwigs. The director has launched debutants Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt with the film, all of who have proved to be exceptionally talented individuals!

“Whatever I think of, I make. I wanted to make a campus film about friendship, so made ‘Student of the Year‘. It was different for us because we worked with newcomers for the first time. The whole idea excited me, so I made the film. Shooting with newcomers was a different but not a difficult experience,” said the 40-year-old filmmaker. In the past, Karan has directed several films including the aforementioned Kuch Hota Hai (1998) followed by  Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) and My Name Is Khan (2010).

“Working with the best actors and setting up a project with movie stars was almost easy. Them doing exactly what they are capable of, which is brilliance, and me just being there and conducting this whole opera would have been wonderful, but not something I hadn’t already done before. Working with first time actors, nurturing them, making sure they present themselves as movie actors, was a far more challenging experience. I felt the need to challenge myself,” said Karan for who working with newcomers was a learning experience of sorts.
